What is the Chemical Dependency Field?

Chemical dependency is a disorder of the brain. Most people think it is a behavioral or social disorder, but actually it is a combination of neurophysiology and drug use that calls for study and understanding. It is a bio-psycho-social problem that must be addressed in treatment and prevented through formal programs.

Currently, Washington state requires counselors and case workers employed in chemical dependency treatment settings to have a minimum of 90 college-level credit hours, 45 of which must be in specific chemical dependency courses. Certification also requires up to 2,500 hours of field experience, and the NAADAC certification exam. If a candidate has more schooling, the field experience hour requirement is reduced.

"I work in the chemical dependency profession because I like to watch people make progress in their lives -- no matter how small that progress may seem -- that makes them feel better about themselves. SFCC's program, particularly the field placement experience, make it outstanding."

How much will I earn?

Salaries vary by region, but generally a counselor with two years of education will begin work at $10 to $15 per hour. A bachelor's degree holder can expect to earn an even better wage, and someone with a master's degree will usually have wage parity with the mental health workers in similar positions.

Jobs are available in the Spokane area, throughout the northwest and in Alaska. With the certification requirement, many counselors are finding that additional education leads to greater opportunities in Spokane and elsewhere.
