The AAS-T is an associate degree providing both comprehensive core early childhood content (51-52 credits) based on the National
Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)
standards. The critical content coursework in the AAS-T addresses all of the ECED knowledge competencies required by the Washington
State Board of Education for certified teacher endorsement in Early Childhood Education per WAC 180-82A. The balance of the degree
is made up of significant general education coursework (40 credits) necessary for transfer.
Graduation Requirements for AAS-T in ECE
91-92 credits in courses numbered 100 or above, to be distributed as follows:
Communication Skills Requirement: 10 credits of English Composition, OR 5 credits of English Composition and 5 credits of Introduction to Speech Composition.
Quantitative Skills Requirement: 5 credits (a course where Intermediate Algebra is the pre-requisite.)
Humanities: 10 credits from the SFCC DTA, from at least two disciplines
Social Science: 10 credits from at least two disciplines. Choose 5 credits from the SFCC DTA Social Science Group A and 5 credits from Group B.
Natural Science: 5 credits (must be a lab course).
Critical ECE Content: 51-52 credits of approvied courses
Writing and Diversity: at least one 5-credit writing-intensive course ("W" designated course) must be included within the distribution. At least 5 credtis must be chosen from the approved list of diversity courses ("D" designated course).
Transfer of Courses: contact the 4-year school to which you plan to transfer for a list of approved course choices.
