What Classes Do I Take?

Instructor and Students

During the first year, students will gain a basic understanding of the music technology/audio engineering field. They learn principles and procedures of studio recording, CD production, synthesis, MIDI, live sound reinforcement and location recording. They also receive an introduction to state of the art software programs specific to the digital recording industry, such as Cubase, Digital Performer and ProTools. A major project includes the recording and mixing of demo CDs using student and/or professional bands. The first year also includes basic music theory, piano keyboard skills and study of important business aspects of the music industry.

The second year of the degree program provides intensive study of ProTools, Digital Performer and Logic operating systems as well as advanced study and implementation of studio recording, CD production, live sound reinforcement and MIDI. Students will also hone their creative skills with classes in contemporary harmony, songwriting, MIDI arranging and film scoring. System maintenance and troubleshooting are addressed along with business of music skills relevant to the recording industry.

The associate’s degree program can also serve as a transfer program in the event that a student wishes to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Music Technology/Audio Engineering at applicable colleges and universities.
