Multicultural Services

Mike Martin and Marcio Curi

When Mike Martin began his studies at SFCC, he mostly kept to himself. That dramatically changed after he became friends with three International students who frequented the Multicultural Center. With their encouragement, he signed up as an International Peer Mentor, assisting students from other countries to learn about – and cope with – the United States culture.

Mike’s friendship with Marcio Curi, who is a native of Brazil, has benefited them both. Mike became so interested in the Brazilian culture that he is taking Spanish classes and plans to travel there, perhaps through a study abroad program. Marcio, a whiz at computer programs, assists Mike with Excel skills needed for his accounting studies.

Language and culture can be significant barriers for International Students for whom English is their second language. Marcio was grateful that Mike accompanied him on an excursion to local automotive dealers to buy a car. Both are convinced their friendship will extend beyond their days at SFCC.

Mike attributes a great deal of his success in school – seven consecutive quarters on the Presidential Honor Roll – to support and encouragement from the Multicultural Center. With their assistance, he has applied for and received three scholarships that will continue with him when he transfers to a four-year university.

“The United States is the land of opportunity,” he emphatically states. “But it’s up to you to persist and keep asking until you get what you need!”
