Fish Friday
The custom of serving catfish with all the fixings on Fridays originated in the South as a way of
promoting camaraderie. "Pass the hot sauce!" is a common refrain, and side dishes may include
coleslaw, baked beans, potato salad and "hushpuppies". Hushpuppies are attributed to the Civil War
days, when southerners would keep their dogs from barking at fish fry cookouts by throwing them balls
of fried cornbread with the command, "hush, puppies!" The SFCC Multicultural Center sponsors its own
version of this custom on Fridays, but in the same spirit of fun.
