Spokane Falls Community College

Welcome to the Center for Service-Learning, the gateway to experiential knowledge.

What is Service-Learning?

Service-Learning is a method of teaching and learning that engages students in meaningful service to their communities, through careful integration of academic instruction. Service-Learning gives students an opportunity to use knowledge gained in class to address the needs of the community.

Welcome to Service-Learning!

Service-Learning provides high-quality learning opportunities in alignment with the college's mission. Select from many academic courses with a service learning component.

Why Service-Learning?

Many courses at SFCC have an added life experience component. Internships and course specific clinicals have been utilized in specialized fields of study for a long time. They are one component of Service-Learning. Service-Learning is also available for other academic courses.

Optimizing this teaching and learning method requires coordination between classroom faculty, individual students and our community partners.

Service Learning Courses

Courses which incorporate Service Learning vary from quarter to quarter. This list is not all inclusive. Click on the course title to view the course description.

All course offerings are subject to change. The college cannot guarantee class offerings, designated times or specific instructors - as funding levels and student interest may affect whether or not an offering is available.

Sign Up For Service Learning

There are three forms you will need to begin your Service-Learning experience. They must be filled out completely and turned in to your instructor.

Students who are enrolled in the AmeriCorps Students In Service scholarship program must also fill out the SIS Site Agreement and Time Sheet per SIS policy in order to claim Service-Learning hours toward the scholarship.

Welcome to Service-Learning

On this page you will find opportunities for service within the Greater Spokane region. The Community Partners listed here have all partnered with SFCC to meet the challenges and goals of our Service-Learning program.

Once you know you have a Service-Learning assignment, research the Community Partners tab and choose one or several that meet your class goals.

Using the information provided, contact them, request a volunteer application and set up a time to meet them in person for an interview.

If you have difficulty getting a call or email back from your chosen Community Partner, or if you want to choose a local non-profit organization that is not listed here, contact the staff in the SFCC Center for Service-Learning immediately.

The Service-Learning Club is an active student-run club at SFCC. Belonging and participating go toward building a responsible civic habit as well as a great resume. Many employers are looking for applicants with experience in community engagement – they are looking for the person who will voluntarily go above and beyond. Our college provides this opportunity both through traditional classes with a Service-Learning component and through the Service-Learning Club.
