Career Guides
Completion of the Army Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC) program leads to a commission as a
2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army as an active duty soldier, a reservist or a National Guardsman.
Students enroll in Army ROTC as an additional course while pursuing the academic discipline of their choice.
Completion of the Basic course, normally taken during the first and second years of college, is a prerequisite
for enrolling in the Advanced course at a four-year college or university. The Basic course does not obligate a
student to the Army; 100 and 200 level ROTC courses exist so that students can discover for themselves
whether they desire to continue with the ROTC Advanced course (junior and senior years normally).
ROTC courses are conducted through SFCC via a cross-enrollment agreement with Eastern Washington
University (EWU). Students can meet the qualifications for the Basic course at SCC or SFCC in preparation
for the advanced course. These EWU ROTC classes are held at SFCC. SCC students must travel to SFCC
for classes.
Upon successful completion of the Basic course, students are eligible to apply for Advanced ROTC at any
college or university that offers Army ROTC. Contracted ROTC students receive $400 (juniors) and
$500 (seniors) a month stipend during the advanced course as an EWU student. They will also receive
approximately $600 when they attend the five-week summer camp between the junior and senior years
in college. Upon completion of the Advanced course and graduation from a four-year institution, students are
commissioned as 2nd Lieutenants in the United States Army, as either active duty, reserve, or national
guard officers. While enrolled in the Basic course, students may apply for a two- or three-year full-tuition scholarship which
covers the costs of tuition, fees, books and the monthly stipends highlighted above.
Who may enroll?
Any male or female student.
Military Obligation
Students enrolling in ROTC incur no military obligation by participating in the first two years of the
program. All college credits earned in the ROTC classes count like any other college elective. All
students enrolled in the Advanced course—normally juniors and seniors—are paid $400 and $500
per month respectively for ten months of each school year for the final two years of the ROTC
program at EWU. These students incur a military obligation with a variety of options available. The
options range from reserve or national guard active duty tours for as little as 90 days as a reserve
officer, to opportunities for a full-time professional military career. The commitment for any student is
the same, whether commissioned as an active duty, reserve, or national guard officer.
Scholarships
Students enrolled as cadets in ROTC may compete for two- and three-year Army ROTC scholarships.
These scholarships provide money toward tuition, books and fees, as well a money stipend for each
month of the school year for the duration of the scholarship.
Two Year Program
College students who do not take the first two years of ROTC can still earn a commission in the U.S.
Army. They can attend a five-week ROTC Leader’s Training Course after their sophomore year, then
complete the ROTC advanced course at the college of their choice. Students with prior military
service may be able to meet the requirements of the Basic course if they successfully completed
Army Basic Training. The two-year program is designed for community college students and students
at four-year colleges who did not take Army ROTC during their first two years.
Cost
All books, supplies and equipment needed are provided by the U.S. Army without cost to students
who enroll in these courses.
