Creating a Blackboard Assignment

Use the following steps to create an assignment in Blackboard (you may want to print this page for easy reference):

  1. Login to Blackboard and click the name of the course you are teaching. (Note: You must have Blackboard Instructor privileges in the selected course to create an assignment.)
  2. Click the Control Panel button in the Navigation bar on the left of your classroom, and then click Assignments under Content Areas.
  3. To create a folder to hold your assignments, click the Folder button. The Add Folder form opens, with Folder Information, Options, and Submit sections.
  4. Click the down arrow on the right of the Name list box and click the Other -- Add Text Below.
  5. In the or specify your own name text box, type name of the assignment folder (e.g., Week 1 Assignments).
  6. If you want to specify a color for the folder name (title), click the Pick button next to the Choose Color of Name display box. A Colorpicker palette appears. Click the color you want. The color will appear in the display box.
  7. If you want a description of the folder to appear below its name, then type it in the Text box. Blackboard 6.1 has a built-in editor, which allows you to easily format your assignment description. It works much like Microsoft Word. For example, you can use the familiar toolbar buttons in this editor to change the font size and color, align, indent, italicize, bold, underline, along with the ability to add tables, number steps, and bulleted items. In addition, you can highlight text and link it to a Web site using the Hyperlink button. You can also spell check your description by clicking the ABC button. For for additional details on using this built-in editor, click the help ? icon.
  8. If you want, make changes to the default availability options, and then scroll down and click the Submit button.
  9. Click the OK button to create of the folder. The folder name and description (if you entered one) will appear. For easy and quick identification, folders are preceded by a folder icon, while content items display a document icon.
  10. Click the folder name (e.g., Week 1 Assignments), and then click the Item button. The Add Content form appears. It displays Content Information, Content Attachments, Options, and Submit sections.
  11. Click the down arrow on the right of the Name list box and click the Other -- Add Text Below.
  12. In the or specify your own name text box, type the title of your assignment document (e.g., Assignment One - Starbucks).
  13. Click the Text box and type in your assignment. You can use the built-in editor to format your assignment, specifying such enhancements as font size and color, text alignment, indentation, italicization, bold facing, and underling. You can also add tables, number steps, and bulleted items. In addition, you can highlight text and link it to a Web site using the Hyperlink button, plus include file attachments, insert graphics, and add audio and video to your assignment description. This editor lets you spell check your assignment by clicking the ABC button. For for additional details about using this built-in editor, click the help ? icon. Note: If you used Word 2002 to create your assignment, you can simply paste it into the Text box and the document will retain its formatting. If you used FrontPage 2002, use the instructions in Developing an Online Syllabus in Blackboard to cut and paste your assignment into Blackboard.
  14. If you desire, fill in the Contents Attachments section, and then scroll down and click the Submit button.
  15. If you want, make changes to the default settings in the Options section, and then scroll down and click the Submit button. You can use the Modify button to edit your assignment folder or item and the Remove button to delete an assignment folder or item permanently from Blackboard. Once you create multiple folders on the same level, new folders will appear at the bottom of the list. Tip: You can rearrange the order of the folders by selecting a different number from the small list box in front of a folder. For example, if you want to move a folder to the top of the list, click the down arrow in the list box, and then click 1.
  16. Return to the Blackboard classroom, click the Assignment button in the Navigation bar, click your new assignment folder (e.g., Week 1 Assignments), and then click your new assignment item name (e.g.,  Assignment One - Starbucks) to view it.
