Grading Policy

SFCC uses only numeric grades. Although each instructor has a different grading policy, all assign course grades according to the following percentages.

Letter Grade Numeric Grade
A    3.8 - 4.0
A - 3.5 - 3.7
B + 3.2 - 3.4
B    2.9 - 3.1
B - 2.6 - 2.8
C + 2.3 - 2.5
C    2.0 - 2.2
C - 1.6 - 1.9
D + 1.3 - 1.5
D    1.0 - 1.2
D - 0.7 - 0.9
F    0.0

 

Grade Symbols

Explanation follows each symbol:

Symbol Explanation
I Incomplete 0.0 grade points; no credit. Work to date is passing but not completed at end of quarter.
N Audit 0.0 grade points; no credit. Special registration.
P Pass 0.0 grade points; credit not calculated in GPA.
F Fail 0.0 grade points; credit is calculated in GPA.
W Official Withdrawal 0.0 grade points; no credit. Initiated by student up to 7th week of quarter.
Z Special Withdrawal 0.0 grade points; no credit. Designated by instructor at end of quarter.
* Missing Grade No grade received from faculty.

 

Grade Point Average (GPA)

Grade Point Averages are calculated by dividing grade points earned by the credit hours attempted. The following is an example of a grade point avearage computation:

Credit Hours Attempted Times (X) Grade Equals
(=)		 Grade Points Earned
5 X 3.0 = 15.0
3 X 4.0 = 12.0
4 X 2.0 = 8.0
5 X 1.0 = 5.0
1 X 0.0 = 0.0
18       40.0

Divide 40.0 by 18 to calculate a grade point average of 2.22.
