What are First Year Academies (FYA)?
FYAs are an opportunity for new students to work with one another on their educational goals by plugging
them in to campus resources like clubs, tutoring, mentoring, speakers, events and academic advising.
How do I join an FYA?
It’s easy. Enroll in the Learning Community associated with the academy you’re interested in AND First Year
Introduction. Note: If you can’t get one or both of these classes into your schedule, but still want to
participate in FYA activities, contact Academy Coordinator, Heather
Keast.
Can anybody take an FYA?
Academies are designed for new students just starting college, but anybody can sign up.
Why should I take FYA?
FYAs really connect you with your classmates, teachers and campus – which ultimately makes learning more fun
and you more successful.
What will I get out of an FYA?
You get a jump on the required classes for your program and lasting friendships and positive relationships
with teachers and classmates who want you to succeed.
I’m still a college student if I’m in an FYA, right?
For sure. Academies are just one way to start your education at Spokane Falls – a way that’s intense and
supportive at the same time. FYAs combine challenging subjects with outside activities like service learning,
films and speakers that help you get a better understanding on the subject (and better grades) and graduate
on time.
Are FYAs always the same?
No, they change every year. Check this website winter quarter for next year’s academies.
