What is sustainability? In 1987, a comprehensive and short definition was created: "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations to meet their own needs." Improving the quality of life for all humans — reducing poverty and social injustice — must also connect to the basis of life on earth: living within the carrying capacity of ecosystems.
