Tips
One-time Deferred Payment.
You are eligible for a deferred payment on your tuition for the first quarter that you attend school
until you receive your first payment. This is the one and only time you can receive this benefit.
The VA only pays benefits for classes required to graduate.
Prior to registration, consult with a counselor. Tell the counselor you are a veteran to receive
assistance selecting classes appropriate to your program and to evaluate previous credits earned.
Be careful of short-term classes: your benefits may be adversely affected.
The VA only pays for the dates you actually attend class.
Notify VA Office of Changes.
To ensure the receipt and accuracy of your monthly check, you must
notify the SFCC VA Office of all changes in your class schedule.

After your VA application is submitted by the Veterans Affairs Office and
processed by the VA, you will be awarded an amount of money broken down into a daily rate
based on a 30-day month.
- For example, if you are awarded $300 per month you would be paid $10 per day.
The first month and last month you attend will be a prorated amount.
- For example, if classes begin September 18 you would be eligible for 13 days of payments for September, or $130.
- If the school year ends June 16th your last check would consist of 16 days pay for June, or $160.00
Normal Method
-
After your application has been processed by the VA and your money begins to
arrive, the VA will continue to pay you approximately 4 to 6 weeks behind.
For example, you will receive January’s money sometime in February.
- Direct Deposit (Chapters 30, 1606, and 1607):
- Direct Deposit Sign-up: 1-877-838-2778
- Your bank account should be credited within 7-10 days.
- Access payment information online at www.gibill.va.gov.
- Checks mailed to you should arrive within 10 days to 3 weeks.
-
Be aware that the VA may be inconsistent in their check delivery dates.
VA workload and holidays can interrupt their processing, causing delays.
Advance Pay
If you have not attended school for at least 30 days prior to the start of the
quarter you may elect the option of Advance Pay. The VA will temporarily
break from their normal method of paying one month behind and issue an amount
consisting of a portion of the first month of school (actual days attended) plus all of
the second month. This large advance check is sent to the school sometime during the 30-day
period before the beginning of the quarter (or after) and generally cannot be released
until you have registered for your classes.
NOTE: When you receive Advance Pay there will be a long stretch before you receive
your next check as the VA returns to their normal method of payment.
- For example, if you receive Advance Pay for fall quarter (consisting of a portion of
September and October) then the VA must wait until you have completed November before they
can pay you again.
- Some chapters cannot receive Advance Pay.
