What is New Student Orientation?

New Student Orientation will give you the tools and information you need to be successful at SFCC. Select a topic below to find out more.

After attending New Student Orientation, I will:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the campus culture and environment
  • Feel connected to the IEL, SCC, or SFCC community
  • Recognize that the college and I share responsibility for my academic success
  • Communicate effectively with peers and staff, including composing appropriate questions and interacting appropriately in small and large group settings
  • Demonstrate an attitude of interest toward attending college
  • Know where to find the information I need to be successful
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of my educational pathway

Academic Advising/Counseling

  • Get to know an academic advisor/counselor who will be a future resource
  • Practice using Plan My Schedule, Web Registration, and Ed Planner
  • Get to know the basics of my degree/certificate program requirements
  • Begin to realistically self-appraise, set goals, and make plans to reach those goals in light of my interests and abilities
  • Begin to feel a sense of self-sufficiency and responsibility for reaching my educational goals

College Knowledge

  • Know how to navigate my campus and find relevant resources
  • Know how to contact my instructor and understand important grading requirements
  • Learn one way to manage my time

Who can attend the New Student Orientation?
Students without previous college experience and who have completed a placement test may attend.

Why should I attend?
  • You receive a priority registration date.
  • You can confer with an adviser and register for classes.
  • New Student Orientation will familiarize you with resources available to students at SFCC.
How long does it take?
New Student Orientation, advising, and registration requires no more than three and a half hours.

How do I make an appointment?
  • A staff member will sign you up after taking your placement test.
  • If you tested at another location, please contact the Testing Center for an appointment:

What should I bring?
Be prepared to register for classes. You will need:
  1. Your SID and PIN numbers.
  2. Your placement test scores.
  3. Your placement test folder (given to you after taking your placement test).
  4. Completed class schedule plan .
  5. Your appointment confirmation.
