What is New Student Orientation?

New Student Orientation will give you the tools and information you need to be successful at SFCC. Select a topic below to find out more.

After attending New Student Orientation, I will:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the campus culture and environment
  • Feel connected to the SFCC community
  • Recognize that the college and I share responsibility for my academic success
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of my educational pathway

After this session, I will:

  • Understand my career categories/ interests and strengths in relation to the Holland's assessment
  • Begin the process of thinking about how to apply my Holland results to the selection of my degree, which includes my academic plan
  • Acknowledge I received information about how changing my degree impacts financing of tuition and my time for completion

After this session, I will:

  • Know how to navigate SFCC's website and where to locate online resources
  • Learn basic academic terminology
  • Demonstrate that I comprehend the importance of 'planning for completion' by developing my own completion plan

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can attend the New Student Orientation?
Students without previous college experience and who have completed a placement or submitted alterative placement documents through the Testing Center may attend.

Why should I attend?
  • You receive a priority registration date.
  • You can meet with an adviser and register for classes.
  • New Student Orientation will familiarize you with resources available to students at SFCC.
How long does it take?
New Student Orientation, academic consulting, and registration requires a minimum of 3 hours.

How do I make an appointment?
  • A staff member will sign you up after taking your placement test or alternative placement testing.
