Definition

A one-time waiver is permission for students to enroll in a class for which they have not met the pre-requisite. During the quarter for which the waiver was issued, students must receive a 2.0 in the course they waived into, or be required to take the next course for which they have met the pre-requisite.

Pre-requisites

• Math 90-99:  A 2.0 in the preceding course or appropriate placement score.
• Math 141:  A 2.8 in Math 99 or a 2.0 in Math 108.
• Math 107, 108, 201, 208, 213, and 221:  A 2.0 in Math 99 or appropriate placement score.

Developmental Math Courses (Math 90, 91, 92, and 99)

• If you have ever taken a developmental math course at SFCC or SCC, you must have a 2.0 in the preceding course or have taken the challenge test (available in the Math Learning Center). For example, if you want to take Math 99 and you have taken Math 91, you must have a 2.0 in Math 92, or have a 2.0 in Math 91 and pass the challenge exam.
• If you have not taken a developmental math course and have been placed into a math class via the math placement exam, you may use a one-time only waiver into the following course. For example, if you have placed into Math 91, you may waive into Math 92.
• The placement exam may be re-taken twice each quarter. The placement exam must be taken at least twice before a waiver will be issued.
• A student may not waive out of Math 99. For example, you cannot use a waiver to enroll in Math 115. The prerequisite must be met.
• You cannot waive into an express math course. Our express classes are Math 91/92 and Math 92/99.

100 Level Courses

• A student may not waive out of Math 99.
• The pre-requisite for Math 141 is a 2.8 in Math 99.
• If you have not taken a math course and have been placed into a math class via the math placement exam, you may use a one-time only waiver into the following course. For example, if you have placed into Math 141, you may waive into Math 142.
• The placement exam may be re-taken twice each quarter. The placement exam must be taken at least twice before a waiver will be issued.

Challenge Exams

• Students can take a challenge exam to waive out of Math 90, 91, or 92 only.
• The challenge exams may be taken in the Math Learning Center (MLC).
• A student can only take the challenge exam once in a quarter.
• The challenge exam must be taken before the end of the third day of the quarter.
• You must receive a 75% or higher in order to be granted a waiver.
• The MLC will notify the faculty member in charge of waivers of the students receiving 75% or higher, who will be granted a one-time waiver.
