If you have not taken the placement test, or are retaking the exam, here are some
tips for preparing for the exam.
- First realize that when you sit down to take the exam, you will be given the opportunity
to choose the level at which you start. There are three levels from which to choose
from:
- Pre-Algebra corresponding with placement into Math 91
- Algebra corresponding to placement into Math 92-99
- College Algebra corresponding to placement into Math& 107, Math 108, 201, 208, 221.
Where you start in some ways does not matter as the test adapts its next question
to how you have done up to that point. However, you may have to answer more questions
if you start at an inappropriate level.
- Understand what the placement test is likely to ask you. For examples of test
questions go to the COMPASS study guide.
Note that if you wish to test into a 100-200 level course, you must be familiar
with all of the levels of the exam below, that is you must understand College Algebra,
Algebra and Pre-Algebra. Likewise, if you wish to test into Math 92 or Math 99 you
must be familiar with Algebra and Pre-Algebra.
- It is in your best interest that you are fully prepared to take the exam. Testing
out of even one course can save you time and money.
You may want to review some topics that you have previously seen. You may go to
the library or the
Math Learning Center to look at the algebra books.
For further information on how to review, please see any
SFCC math instructor.
