Placement into a mathematics course is done in three ways:
1. Compass Placement Exam
Initial placement is usually done by taking the COMPASS placement exam. Placement
exams are offered through the New Student Entry
Center located in the SUB room 140. Contact them at (509) 533-3401
for more information on testing times or visit their
drop in calendar. The cost of the exam is $20 payable at the Cashier's office
in Building 17.
2. Placement Through Course Grades
Many math courses at SFCC carry specific grades in a qualifying course.
3. Placement with Transfer Credit or Various Examinations
Assessment IS required for:
- All first-time new college students
- All re-activating students who have not met the math proficiency requirement and
who have not been assessed within the last three years
- All transfer students who have not met the math proficiency requirement and who
have not been assessed within the last three years
Assessment is NOT required for:
- Students who have been assessed within the last three years
- SCC or SFCC students who have successfully completed college level math and are
enrolling in the next level of math
- Students taking fewer than 10 credits, not enrolling in math and not pursuing
a degree or certificate
- Students who have received a grade of 2.0 or better in intermediate algebra from
another institution and are enrolling in the next level of math. College transcripts
must be on file to support this exemption.
Note: Students who want to enroll in an upper level math class must provide
a transcript showing satisfactory completion of the prerequisite classes or
must assess prior to enrolling in an upper level math class.
