Guten Tag.
I am the German instructor for this year at SFCC. I just graduated from the University of Giessen, Germany,
where I obtained my Masters in foreign language teaching. My major was English and I also studied Spanish and
Portuguese. My main research interest in Germany was American literature and culture. My thesis was about the
representation of Mexican-Americans in contemporary film.
I am really happy to be in the U.S. because it is such a multicultural and transnational country. I find the
different facets of culture thrilling and I am interested in foreign languages and foreign cultures. Spokane
is a great place to be because the people are really nice and the environment is magnificent. One of my
greatest pleasures in language learning is reading literature and watching movies in the target language. I
also like to communicate in foreign languages and produce the different sounds that are particular to each
language. I was born and raised in Germany so I hope I can bring a piece of German culture to my classes at
SFCC.
To my students I want to say that from my experience I can say that it is important to find an area of the
target culture (German in this case) that you hold or develop a personal interest in. One can find interesting
texts in almost any topic area. I think it is essential to find something that you personally enjoy. Learning
the German language can be challenging and therefore one has to try to make it a pleasurable experience by
filling it with content that meets one's personal interests.
Besides languages I love music and skateboarding. I secretly practice the piano and play a little bit of
guitar and drums. I like to go running and going to the gym and if I had more time I'd love to go to Yoga
classes. I am also a big fan of cooking and eating. I cannot think of any dish I do not like. My all time
favorite is pasta in all its wonderful variations.
If you are interested in German or have any questions please feel free to contact me by phone (533-3898) or
come by my office (24-312). I am looking forward to teaching at SFCC and I hope you will have fun in my
classes!
Auf wiedersehen.
