About Business Administration

More people earn their living in business than in any other field of endeavor. Regardless of their basic training--whether it be in design, social services, health fields, the arts or a vocational area--most persons seeking employment turn to private business. The profit or loss within a company can depend on good business "know-how." Even those who do not earn their living through business enterprise directly (such as lawyer, small business owner and government employee) usually find it necessary to know something about business operations. Hence, the importance of business administration can hardly be overemphasized.

Consult a counselor or academic adviser for recommended courses specific to student's choice of transfer institution.

Courses Offered

You MUST take the following Business Classes to have junior standing in business departments when you transfer. Other business courses will NOT fulfill a degree requirement for Business Transfer Students.

All course offerings are subject to change. The college cannot guarantee class offerings, designated times or specific instructors - as funding levels and student interest may affect whether or not an offering is available.

Degrees and Transfer Information

Associate in Business DTA

Students should pursue an Associate in Business DTA/MRP if they are interested in transferring to a four-year college to earn a bachelor's degree in accounting, economics or another business-related field.

The Associate in Business degree program consists of liberal arts classes and includes the first few accounting courses required at four-year schools. Students interested in the transfer program should obtain the current college catalog and transfer manual from their intended institution to determine what requirements can be satisfied at SFCC. Generally, all courses transfer except those taught at four-year schools with course numbers of 300 or higher.

Courses Taught: Principles of Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Survey of Economics I grew up in a small town and have lived in both Washington, but also Alaska for several years. My hobbies have been or are, flying, scuba diving, woodworking, and rebuilding old trucks. The reasons that I teach are because of students. I thoroughly enjoy the interaction and seeing people develop new skills or sharpen the ones they already have.

Courses Taught: Principles of Accounting, Payroll and Business Taxes, QuickBooks, Excel for Accountants; Fundamentals of Bookkeeping, Peachtree. I love to teach accounting because beginning students get very excited when it all clicks. When I was a teenager my parents started their own business and I was able to keep their accounting records. Accounting always made sense to me and I liked being able to explain the fundamentals to anyone who would listen. After working in public accounting and private industry I realized that I wanted to do something different. Teaching allows me to stay in a field I love AND share the subject with many.

I was born and brought up in Calcutta, India and moved to the United States in 1998. After receiving my B.A. in Business and Economics from Coe College, a small liberal-arts college in Cedar Rapids, IA, I moved to Eugene, OR, to attend the University of Oregon. After I earned an M.A. in Economics from the University of Oregon, I went back to Coe College and taught economics there for three years before moving to Spokane, WA. When I am not teaching I love to play tennis, listen to old Indian film music, and cook spicy Indian food.

Niccum, Jeffery; Instructor

Born and raised in the Spokane area, I worked in the construction industry while pursuing a degree in professional accounting from EWU. I then launched a construction business, first as a residential, then as a commercial general contractor. After several years, armed with my accounting degree, I shifted into "private industry" accounting and began working as the controller for a large local contractor. I passed the CPA exam in 1989, and began work on my MBA –; finishing in 1994. I left private industry accounting in 1992, starting my own public accounting practice from scratch, which I continue to own and operate to this day. Having been told I have a knack for explaining accounting, I responded to the need for an instructor at SFCC, and was fortunate to be given an opportunity to teach beginning in 2010 – which I enjoy very much. I look forward to working with you!

Wylie, Mark; Instructor

I was born and grew up in Southern California. After earning my BA at a small college in Illinois, I returned to my home state for graduate study at UCLA, where I earned my MA and Ph.D. in Economics. I then spent several years as a "freeway flier," teaching at a variety of colleges, both 2 and 4-year, in the Los Angeles area. I moved to Spokane in 2001 when I was hired full-time at SFCC, and have been here ever since. When I'm not teaching I like reading and movies, and I'm also involved with, and am a former Chair of, the Browne's Addition Neighborhood Council.
