UND AEROSPACE
University of North Dakota
John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences
The University of North Dakota's (UND) Department of Aviation bases its educational
philosophy on a four-year university degree approach. Consequently, students who
obtained flight certificates/ratings without college credit have not satisfied the
academic requirements within the aviation major that they are pursing.
Possessing a flight certificate or rating and how a person obtains that flight training
are two separate considerations. It is important that students who possess flight
certificates/ratings, with or without college credit, understand this flight policy
and any specific requirements that may affect their academic status.
Students majoring in Airport Management, Air Traffic Control, or Aviation Systems
Management, and holding a Private Pilot Certificate obtained without college credit
are required to take Aviation 102 – Introduction to Aviation and complete the flight
lessons contained in the Private Pilot Test Lab course.
Aviation Management, Commercial Aviation, Air Transport, and Flight Education majors
who hold a Private Pilot Certificate obtained without college credit are also required
to take Aviation 102 - Introduction to Aviation and complete the flight lessons
contained in the Private Pilot Test Lab course before taking Aviation 221 – Basic
Attitude Instrument Flying.
Aviation Management, Commercial Aviation, Air Transport, or Flight Education majors
who hold a Commercial Pilot Certificate and/or and Instrument Rating obtained without
college credit are required to take Aviation 221, 222, 323, 324, 325, and complete
the flight lessons contained in the Commercial Pilot Test Lab course and the Multi-Engine
course. In addition to the above and any other academic major requirements, candidates
must complete a minimum of one advanced flight course while in residence at UND.
These courses are CFI certification, CFI with Instrument rating certification, Multi-Engine
Instructor rating certification, ATP, or any helicopter flight course.
Students with pilot certificates obtained with transfer college credit must demonstrate
proficiency in each certificate and rating. In addition to the above requirements,
students with transfer flight courses must complete a minimum of one advanced flight
course in residence at UND.
Airport Management, Air Traffic Control, and Aviation Systems Management candidates
who hold a Private Pilot Certificate acquired with transfer college credit must
demonstrate proficiency by satisfactorily completing a Flight Lesson 14 Progress
Check. In addition, candidates must complete one flight course while in residence
at UND Aerospace. This may include the Private Pilot Test Lab course, Introduction
to Aerobatic Fight, Tailwheel Certification, or any advanced flight course offered
at UND Aerospace.
Students enrolled in flight courses are required to finish those flight lessons
prescribed to each individual course. Failure to complete the lessons will result
in an unsatisfactory grade.
Once a student has enrolled at UND, all subsequent flight training required in the
academic major must be completed in residence. Flight training at other schools
while enrolled at UND is not permitted. Students who receive flight training elsewhere
while attending UND Aerospace will not receive credit for that training.
